The Celts used knotwork to decorate many of their artifacts. To them, the intricate patterns woven into spirals and knots symbolise the continuity of life. Archibald Knox (1864-1933) was born on the Isle of Man. He was active in the Arts and Crafts movement, which paralleled Europe's Art Nouveau era of the early 20th century. His designs reflect the Celtic tradition and his belief in functionalism and simplicity of design.
