Rune buckle (bu96)

Rune Buckle (bu96)
Pewter circle inscribed with the original and oldest 24 characters of the runic alphabet, known as the Common Germanic Futhark. This buckle has a hinged bar for the belt to clip onto and the other end has a strong prong to push through the hole in the belt.

As historical and archeological items, the runes show up over a period extending from 200 BC to the late Middle Ages (and into the present) in an area from Iceland to Romania, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean.
Runes were used to inscribe names, owner's and maker's formulas, as charms, on jewellery such as amulets and brooches, on personal items such as combs, or on weapons. Runes were also used to commemorate the dead on memorial or gravestones. Runes could also be used for official purposes, e.g. on coins, and for many other reasons. What is characteristic of most runic inscriptions is that they are relatively short. Although there are a substantial number of runic inscriptions recording verse, runes were not generally used for literature as we know it. The earliest runes were engraved on stone, metal, wood or bone.
