Large paua shell teardrop with mobile pewter openwork knot on rhodium-plated snake chain.
The Celts used knotwork to decorate many of their artifacts. To them, the intricate patterns woven into spirals and knots symbolise the continuity of life. Paua shell is only found in the sea around New Zealand. This marine mollusc eats seaweed and lives clinging to the rocks at depths of 1-10 metres, normally along the shoreline. It is managed in a sustainable way. Each shell is different in its colour tonings and in the patterns within the shell.
