Pewter pendant on adjustable leather thong. The Ogham inscription represents December and the rowan tree. It symbolises magical and intuitive qualities - protection against enchantment, maintaining control of one's senses, attributes of a guardian.
The alphabet of the Oghams is also known under the name of Oghm, Oghaimor Ogam, created according to the legend by Ogma (Celtic god Ogmios),god of knowledge. Inscriptions in Ogham characters are only found inthe British Isles. There are about 350 known inscriptions carvedbetween 300 & 700 AD. Ogham is really an alphabetic code ratherthan an alphabet. There were four groups of five letters in the systembut later five more signs were added to represent dipthongs. Theinscriptions themselves had a central stem from which short staves wentleft, right or crossed. Although many were magical, most were memorialor invocatory.
Our Oghams are symbolic of trees associated with months of the year.All of the trees representing the months and letters of the Celticcalendar and alphabet also represent a fragment of the Celticcosmology, their archetypal symbols and their immediate world view.Each tree has a corresponding god or deity as well as a symbol andheavenly body associated with it.
